X-Rings
Rothkopf is a rubber component company that provides superior products and solutions to our customers. Customers have put their faith in us since 1956 and have been rewarded with superior products delivered at a fair price. Learn more about how we can help with X-rings below.
The X-ring, named for its four-lobed cross-section profile, brings some unique features to the seal designer’s table.
The four-lobed design provides twice the sealing surface of an O-ring and may be used in the same sized O-ring groove. With more sealing surface, less radial squeeze is required to provide an effective seal. Lower squeeze yields lower friction and wear, prolonging seal life. The area between the lobes also acts as a lubricant reservoir, further lowering friction and enabling smoother startups.

O-ring runs along the outer diameter, which is its primary sealing surface. The X-ring shape allows for the mold parting line to fall between the lobes, away from the sealing surface.
With a wider profile and the lobes occupying the corner spaces of the groove, the X-ring is less likely to contort or roll in the groove in dynamic applications.
X-rings are available in the same compound materials as O-rings and carry the same agency approvals. Reach out to Rothkopf to determine if an X-ring is the right part for your application.
